Chapter Twelve

Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep!

The loud ringing of Lance’s alarm clock echoed throughout his bedroom, almost immediately awaking him from his sleep. Groaning, he wiped the drool from the corner of his mouth as he tapped the top of the alarm clock and sat up in his king-sized bed.

It was eight in the morning on a Saturday and like every morning, he slid to the side of his bed, kneeled to his knees, closed his eyes, folded his hands under his chin, and prayed.

“Dear Father God, thank you for blessing me and allowing me to see another day. Please help me keep my faith through the bad days, and help me always appreciate everything you’ve blessed me with, big or small.” Lance prayed as he silently paused, opened his eyes and quickly closed them again. “God, please help me guide Novel into the right direction. Please help that child realize that there is more to life other than darkness and misery. Whatever she’s going through or have been through, please help her know that she can make it through and God please help me show her this, too. In Jesus’s name I pray, Amen.”

Standing to his feet, he walked into his bathroom and stepped out of his night clothes, glancing at himself in the mirror. Gazing at his masculine physique, he slightly smiled before taking his Gillette shaver and shaving cream, rubbing it on his already bald head, chin, and around the edge of his face, shaving the little hairs off.

He walked to the shower and turned it on, adjusting the water to a warm temperature, and hopped in. Fifteen minutes later, he hopped out of the shower and made his way back into his bedroom to get dressed.

Dressed in a pair of khaki slacks and an all-white Lacoste shirt, Lance glanced at himself one last time before grabbing his car keys and briefcase, making his way out of his two-bedroom house.

Twenty minutes later, once he reached Truth’s house, he climbed out of his Mercedes Benz, walked onto his porch, and rang the doorbell.

“Who is it?” Truth yelled.

“Lance, I’m here for Novel.”

Opening the door, Truth slightly smiled as he gave Lance a hand dap and allowed him into his home. Taking a few steps into Truth’s place, Lance glanced around, silently admiring the brown and cream décor and spacious living room and kitchen.

Walking towards Novel’s bedroom, Truth knocked on it and said, “Novel, are you ready? Lance is here to pick you up.”

“Yeah, hold on,” Novel said in a drowsy voice.

Five minutes later, Novel opened the door and walked slowly out of her bedroom.

Lance glanced at her, noticing the distraught look in her eyes as she walked closer to him. Dressed in her usual sweat pants and black shirt with her long hair pulled into a sloppy bun, Novel tossed her backpack on her shoulder, walking pass Truth and Lance and out of the door.

“Good luck with her man,” Truth said as he shook his head, closing the door behind them.
